India is the largest producer of millet in the world. It accounts for 20 % of global production and 80% of Asia's production. Millets grown in Tamil Nadu state include Pearl millet, Sorghum (W/R), Foxtail, Little millet, Barnyard and Kodo. Barnyard millet and kodo millet are cultivated widely in southern Tamil Nadu. Little millet and foxtail millet are predominantly cultivated in northern Tamil Nadu. Finger millet and pearl millet are cultivated across the state as rainfed and semi-irrigated crops. Constraints in processing faced by millet farmers include De hulling, De husking De stoning, cleaning, grading, colour sorting and pest free packaging. Like paddy rice, millet rice could be processed as both raw and parboiled
Most of the organic farmers, Farmers producer companies in the state do not have their own paddy or millet processing units. Their hardly grown organic crops are not organically processed. Awareness and training for organically processing food crops is very important to get the best QC/ lab results for both domestic and international food markets. To address these critical issues, Rasi organics established its own small millet primary processing unit, with the support of TN Government initiative "millet mission" (TNMM) under AIF, Loan from SBI Ambathurai with the guidance of Dindigul Agriculture Business/ Marketing Department.
